Proclamation – NMI Crime Stoppers Month – May 2023

WHEREAS, the Northern Marianas Crime Stoppers Program began in May 1989 with a group of volunteers whose goal was to model this program after already established Crime Stoppers Programs in the US Mainland and Internationally, and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the NMI Crime Stoppers Program is to bring together members of the Community and the Department of Public Safety by providing anonymous tips about crimes that occur throughout our islands, and

WHEREAS, this cooperation has resulted in over 2,140 tips, 304 arrests, the recovery of $298,233.00 in stolen property, and the seizure of nearly $2,727,575.00 worth of illegal narcotics, and

WHEREAS, the NMI Crime Stoppers Program has received awards from both the US Crime Stoppers organization as well as Crime Stoppers International for ingenuity in advertising and public education, and

WHEREAS, the volunteers manning the Board of Directors continue to promote the public’s assistance in keeping our communities safe through the slogan, “See something; say something”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DAVID M. APATANG, Acting Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Laws of the Commonwealth, do hereby proclaim May 2023 as

NMI CRIME STOPPERS MONTH

I call upon our community to participate in promoting public safety and crime prevention. Crime Stoppers is a vital tool in the fight against crime, providing a safe and anonymous way for individuals to report information that can help solve crimes and bring criminals to justice. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter, safer future for ourselves and our loved ones.
