On Wednesday, Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Doug Domenech informed Governor Ralph DLG. Torres that the Department of the Interior has awarded $1,706,075 in Fiscal Year 2020 grant funding through the Office of Insular Affairs’ Energizing Insular Communities (EIC) program Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funding for the CNMI.
“Lt. Governor Palacios and I are very appreciative of our partnership with Assistant Secretary Domenech and the Office of Insular Affairs, and this funding will help our government’s goal of being energy-efficient and to assist the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation with their infrastructural needs. We thank him and his team for their continued support of our priorities. We also want to recognize our Grants Administrator Epiphanio E. Cabrera Jr. and his team for their hard work with our agencies on these opportunities to improve our energy infrastructure,” said Governor Torres.
The EIC funding will be allocated for six high-priority energy projects:
· $672,000 to the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation for Phase III of its Pre-Pay Meter Conversion Project
· $403,500 to the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation to improve efficiencies in power generation through SCADA technologies
· $301,700 to the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation for the acquisition of solar engineering master professional services
· $212,920 to the Department of Public Works for Energy Efficiency/Energy Star rebate programs
· $77,530 to the Office of the Governor to integrate energy efficient and renewable energy for Operational Resiliency: Cool Roof System
· $38,425 to the Women’s Affairs Office to integrate energy efficient and renewable energy for Operational Resiliency: Cool Roof System, LED lighting and window reflective film.
