Governor Torres Provides Assistance to the NMIBF’s U15 National Teams As They Represent the CNMI in the 2022 FIBA Oceania Championships

Governor Torres on Thursday afternoon met with Northern Mariana Islands Basketball Federation (NMIBF) President James Lee, team coaches, and players of the NMIBF U15 National Team to present a check totaling $22,434 which will be used to cover the team’s expenses on Guam as they represent the CNMI in the upcoming FIBA U15 Oceania Championships from November 21-26, 2022.

The players representing the CNMI are products of the NMIBF’s Junior National Basketball Program which seeks to create a sustainable youth development program on-island, with about 40 students enrolled and attending training sessions three times-a-week.

The CNMI U15 National Team will be competing against teams from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, and the host island nation of Guam.

“Youth programs like these allow our athletes to explore opportunities beyond the CNMI, builds character, and promotes healthy and active lifestyles,” said Governor Torres.

“I am proud to see our young athletes compete at this level as the upcoming FIBA championships will allow them to experience what it’s like to compete with the best of the best.“

“I wish them the best of luck, and thank them for working hard to represent the CNMI.”
