In the September 26, 2022 news release in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Department of Labor announced the award of $7,508,990 million in a Dislocated Worker Grant to the CNMI’s DOL Workforce Investment Agency to support its proposed project SkillUp CNMI.
The project, SkillUp CNMI, promotes enhanced strategic public-private partnerships to convey an effective plan to address the shortfalls of the workforce. SkillUp CNMI is designed to serve communities in priority industries, such as Infrastructure-related sectors, including manufacturing, construction, communications, transportation, distribution and logistics; Care Economy sectors such as health and child care; Environmental remediation and climate change mitigation-related industries; and other critical industries such as leisure/hospitality and individuals who have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the social and economic inequities that the pandemic exacerbated, to enter, return to, and/or advance in high-quality jobs in the mentioned growth industries.
“This is exciting news for the CNMI,” said Secretary of Labor Vicky Benavente. “As we continue to emerge from the economic fallout of the pandemic, there will be more opportunities to support the recovery of the business community and affected CNMI workers, most especially those experiencing inordinate social and economic inequities.”
