CCDF Child Care Providers Attend the Active Supervision and Maintaining Ratios Training

On December 3, 2022, 19 child care providers from Saipan attended the Active Supervision and Maintaining Ratios training facilitated by Evergreen Learning Coach Erlaine Evangelista at the Evergreen Learning Training Center in Chalan Kanoa.

Active Supervision goes beyond basic supervision.  The technique includes 6 different strategies:  1. Set up the environment, 2. Position of staff, 3. Scan and count, 4. Listen, 5. Anticipate children’s behavior, and 6. Engage and redirect.  In addition, the training emphasized ratios – the number of adults who are present to teach and care for children in a childcare center. Child to adult ratios for the CNMI varies, depending on the age of the youngest child in the group.

During this two-hour long training, participants engaged in a variety of activities to better understand quality practices related to active supervision and maintaining ratios.  Attendees of the training engaged in group discussions related to their experiences, viewed short video clips, and identified possible strategies for active supervision along with lapses within the shared video clips. Participants also reviewed a scenario and identified which strategies were used to help implement active supervision.

This training is made possible through funding from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Care, CNMI CCDF Program, under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
