CCDF – Child care centers attend health and safety trainings

On Saturday, October 23, 2022, fifteen participants from three child care centers across Saipan participated in two-hour training sessions on the following required health and safety training topics: Prevention of and Response to Emergencies Due to Food and Allergic Reactions, and Administration of Medication, Consistent with Standards for Parental Consent. The trainings were conducted by Evergreen Learning’s Quality Care Specialist, Maricar I. Pena at the Evergreen Learning Training Center in Chalan Kanoa.

These trainings are made possible through funding from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Care, CNMI Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) Program under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.

During the session on the Prevention of and Response to Emergencies Due to Food and Allergic Reactions, the participants learned about food allergies, ways to prevent children’s exposure to them, and planned a response for food allergy reactions, including anaphylaxis.

While attending the afternoon session on the Administration of Medication, Consistent with Standards for Parental Consent, participants from two different centers learned best practices for the storage and administration of medication. Samples of forms and procedures and policies were also presented.

The Child Care Reauthorization Act of 2014 requires that all Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) Program child care providers must complete preservice training requirements in 12 health and safety topic areas before they are allowed to be left alone to supervise young children. The topics of Prevention of and Response to Emergencies Due to Food and Allergic Reactions and Handling and Administration of Medication, Consistent with Standards for Parental Consent, meet two out of the 12 required trainings.
