PROCLAMATION

CNMI Humanities Month

OCTOBER 2021

WHEREAS, the humanities embody much of the accumulated wisdom, intellect, and imagination of humankind;

WHEREAS, the humanities enhance and enrich the lives of all people of the Marianas;

WHEREAS, the humanities help us to better understand our history, cultures, languages, political institutions, and social values;

WHEREAS, the humanities allow us to examine our past and present experiences in light of values and beliefs that we have traditionally relied upon for guidance and direction;

WHEREAS, the humanities preserve a wealth of knowledge that assists us in understanding an increasingly complex world in which we live;

WHEREAS, the Northern Marianas Humanities Council, a private, non-profit corporation established in 1991, has strengthened the humanities in the Marianas through programs such as the Motheread/Fatheread CNMI, Junior High Mock Trial, Sengebau Poetry Competition, Your Humanities Half-Hour and financial assistance awarded through its Community Grants Program;

WHEREAS, the Northern Marianas Humanities Council and the Office of the Governor, through the 2021 Governor’s Humanities Awards, will jointly recognize outstanding individual contributions in the humanities, as well as the contributions made by donors and partners that have sustained and strengthened humanities programming over the past 30 years;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, RALPH DLG. TORRES, Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and I, ARNOLD I. PALACIOS, Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, by the authority vested in us by the Constitution and Laws of the Commonwealth, hereby proclaim October 2021 as

CNMI HUMANITIES MONTH

We call upon the people of the Commonwealth to celebrate and promote the humanities and encourage greater participation among our diverse communities in taking action for the humanities in their respective islands and villages. The humanities allow us to delve into the concept of the human experience and teach us how to be critical thinkers and more informed citizens. Let us continue to support our Northern Marianas Humanities Council as a catalyst for discussions about who we are as a people.

Empowering the Youth, Shaping the Future

Lieutenant Governor David M. Apatang, together with Delbert T. Pua, Special Assistant for the Office of Youth Affairs, recently proclaimed October 2024 as Youth Empowerment Month. The proclamation was made in the presence of members of the Legislature, Cabinet officials, and community partners, all united in their commitment to improving the lives of our youth.
