Proclamation – CNMI Police Week – May 14-20, 2023 and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day – May 15, 2023

WHEREAS, the Congress and President of the United States have designated May 15 as National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, and the week in which it fall as Police Week; and

WHEREAS, the Law Enforcement agencies of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) work tirelessly to protect our citizens, enforce our laws, and keep our neighborhoods safe. They report for duty knowing full well the dangers they face and the sacrifices they may be called upon to make. On May 14th-20th, we pay tribute to the thousands of men and women who serve us with extraordinary bravery, and we remember the heroes who have laid down their lives in pursuit of a safer, more just society.

WHEREAS, it is important that all citizens know and understand the problems, duties, and responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices of their law enforcement agencies, and that members of our law enforcement agencies recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence or disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression or intimidation; and

WHEREAS, the men and women of the law enforcement agencies of the CNMI have grown to be a modern and more scientific law enforcement agency which unceasingly provides a vital public service

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD I. PALACIOS, Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, AND, I, DAVID M. APATANG, Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands by virtue of the authority vested in us by the Constitution and Laws of the Commonwealth, do hereby proclaim the week of May 14 to 20, 2023 as

CNMI POLICE WEEK

and May 15, 2023 as

PEACE OFFICERS’ MEMORIAL DAY

We call upon all patriotic, civic, and educational organizations to participate in appropriate ceremonies and observances in which all our people may join in commemorating law enforcement officers, past and present, who, by their faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities, have rendered a dedicated service to their communities; and in so doing, have established for themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens. Let us all recognize and pay respect to the survivors of our fallen heroes.

Empowering the Youth, Shaping the Future

Lieutenant Governor David M. Apatang, together with Delbert T. Pua, Special Assistant for the Office of Youth Affairs, recently proclaimed October 2024 as Youth Empowerment Month. The proclamation was made in the presence of members of the Legislature, Cabinet officials, and community partners, all united in their commitment to improving the lives of our youth.
