Statement from Governor Arnold I. Palacios and Lt. Governor David M. Apatang on the Passing of one of the CNMI’s Founding Fathers, Edward Deleon Guerrero Pangelinan

We join the people of the Marianas in mourning the loss of one of the founding fathers of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Mr. Edward Deleon Guerrero Pangelinan.

We would also like to extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Pangelinan family during this difficult time.

Mr. Pangelinan played a formative role in the establishment of the Commonwealth. Having served as the Chairman of the Marianas Political Status Commission, which negotiated the political status of the Northern Mariana Islands with the United States in the early 1970s, Mr. Pangelinan was also the first elected resident representative from the NMI to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The legacy of his advocacy on behalf of the people will endure and the impact of his public service continues to benefit the CNMI even to this day. We honor this enduring legacy and thank Mr. Pangelinan and his family.
